Quality of Documents - "The Construction & Design Alliance of Ontario/Ryerson Research Project"

The CDAO has, since its inception, worked to collaborate with owners on the best practices to procure Design and Construction services, sometimes successfully, but all too often we have not been able to convince owners and buyers that there is a better way.

During talks with the Ministry of Infrastructure and others, there was acknowledgment that this problem was impacting projects but to what degree, no one was very sure. Yes, we see numerous RFIs, Addendums, Change Orders, etc. But what is the resulting financial impact of this lack of investment at the front end and what exactly is that impact on a project’s eventual cost in time and money?

The CDAO has worked to create a research project to answer that very question. The proposal has gained national support and will now encompass the entire country. Many associations have stepped up. Members will have read in the DCN that CCA has joined us, along with the CDAO, many of its members, MCAC, others and a surge of Local Construction Associations who have stepped up to ensure this important project goes forward.

Ryerson is updating the proposal to meet this increased support and set milestone dates for its work. On April 9, supporters will gather to meet with Ryerson to create a steering committee to work with Ryerson and officially launch the Project. We have received offers of assistance from OGCA’s APP members Revay & Associates and Aon Risk Solutions to make available data that will be invaluable in creating this report.

Once completed, the Report will be made available at no charge to buyers of Design and Construction services, and we will launch a cross-country education tour to promote the results on how we can better improve the quality of documents and by extension, the quality of our projects.
