January Webinar to Explain Updates to NRMCA EPD and Benchmark Report
Join NRMCA and Athena Sustainable Material Institute on Tuesday, January 10, from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern time as we will discuss updates to the industry-wide EPD, the regional Benchmark Report and how they can be used to demonstrate compliance with green building standards. The Webinar will also introduce an EPD tool for the concrete industry: the Athena Institute has a new Web-based tool for ready mixed concrete manufacturers that:

• Is customized to individual operations;
• Delivers instant LCA/EPD data for any mix; and
• Helps create full LCA reports and EPDs at low cost.

They’ve built this tool on its previous industry-average LCA work for NRMCA; it can help support ready mix producers to find the "greenest" mixes when helping customers earn LEED points.

Federal Court Strikes Down Department of Labor Persuader Rule
Last week, Judge Samuel R. Cummings of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas ruled that the Department of Labor’s (DOL) "persuader" advice rule is "unlawful." This latest development ends DOL's ability to implement the rule. Judge Cumming’s decision comes on the heels of his ruling back in November issuing a permanent injunction on the same rule. The injunction and summary judgment, sought in part by the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace or CDW (of which NRMCA is a member), is a huge win for industry. Specifically, the summary judgment request was sought by 10 separate states, the National Federation of Independent Business, Texas Association of Business, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Home Builders and Texas Association of Builders. The persuader rule, which NRMCA was ardently opposed to, aimed to limit employers’ ability to seek and retain legal counsel for purposes of consulting on employee union organizing drives. The rule also would have required employers and legal counsel to disclose certain financial and other unnecessary private company information.

Report Issued on Joint Deterioration in Concrete Pavements
The Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University has released a report that discusses strategies for preventing or limiting premature joint deterioration due to salt reactivity and joint saturation. The primary goal is to help concrete pavement engineers understand the causes of premature joint deterioration, focusing on deterioration due to deicing/anti-icing salts and joint saturation. The guide discusses strategies for preventing or limiting such deterioration and also provides summaries of joint maintenance, repair and restoration strategies, including a decision matrix. Finally, the guide offers guidelines for developing project specifications.

The report can be accessed here.
