NRMCA e-news
Exhibit space is now available for NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2017 being held at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center from October 1-3 in Grapevine, TX (Dallas area). This is the second year the event will be co-located with the American Concrete Pumping Association’s (ACPA) Education Conference. The application process has changed this year as NRMCA is moving toward a priority formula for the assignment of exhibit space. Applications and payment received prior to July 1, 2017 will be part of the Priority Assignment Process. All past exhibitors in NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks and/or the ACPA Education Conference will be assigned by priority number first. All new exhibitors will then be assigned in the order in which they were received. Applications received on or after July 1, 2017 will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis by Exhibition Management.

Exhibit space costs can be found in the Exhibitor Prospectus. Reserve your space now by completing the Exhibitor Application and Attendee Registration Forms and returning them to NRMCA. Please note that the cost of the exhibit space does NOT include employee registration so the separate Attendee Registration Form should be completed for all employees of exhibiting companies.

For more information, please contact Senior Director of Meetings Jessica Walgenbach at jwalgenbach@nrmca.org. Click here to access the ConcreteWorks Web site for more event information.

NRMCA’s Local Paving Team highlighted concrete overlays of asphalt parking lots at last week’s International Conference of Shopping Centers (ICSC) RECon held in Las Vegas for the fourth year and the results keep getting better, reports Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Jon Hansen.

"Three years ago we switched the message in the booth to just concrete overlays of asphalt parking lots," he said. "The interest increased dramatically and each year since we have gathered more project leads than the year before. During the past year, we did a Design Assistance Program (DAP) workup for a shopping center owner that stopped during the 2016 conference. During the year, an American Society of Concrete Contractors member who is experienced in concrete overlays, visited the site and prepared a bid for the owner. And this year we arranged a meeting in the booth of the contractor and owner. The meeting was very productive and looks favorable to turn into a number of overlay projects for the owners many locations."

Other Local Paving Team members participating in the conference booth included Phil Kresge, vice president, local paving and Brian Killingsworth, executive vice president | division head, local paving.

Do you have questions about the Hours of Service 30-minute break? Did you know the ready mixed concrete industry now has an exemption from the 30-minute break? Did you know ready mix drivers’ logging exemption was extended to 14 hours? Answers, explanations and guidance on these questions, and more, are now part of NRMCA's Compliance Guide for the Federal Drivers' Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.

Over the last decade, the federal drivers' Hours of Service (HOS) regulations have been subject to numerous court actions and congressional meddling. Now, once again, there are recent, new revisions to the HOS rules, including the confusing 30-minute break, 34-hour restart provision and when mixer drivers do and don’t need to use logs. Do you know how these changes impact your drivers? Is your company in compliance? Do you know how to be compliant? The 2017 HOS Guide will explain what the law is, how the industry is impacted and what your company and drivers need to do, or not do, to be compliant. The 2017 HOS Guide also covers the new ready mixed concrete driver compliance scenario for Electronic Logging Devices or ELDs.

NRMCA's 2017 Drivers' Hours of Service Regulations Compliance Guide has all the answers to help you and your company be prepared for complying with Hours of Service regulations.

The next NRMCA Concrete Durability Course is scheduled for September 18-20, 2017 at the AGC of Utah headquarters in Salt Lake City. The course is taught by Michael Thomas, University of New Brunswick; Kevin Folliard, University of Texas at Austin and NRMCA Engineering Staff. The course provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of cement and concrete as they relate to durability of concrete. Topics will cover cracking, alkali aggregate reactions, sulfate attack, corrosion of reinforcing steel, freeze-thaw durability and other aspects. A group exercise will be facilitated to walk attendees through Concreteworks software that can be used to develop concrete mixtures for durability and to evaluate the potential for temperature-related cracking.

The course also discusses the durability provisions in the Building Code - ACI 318-14 and how specifications can be structured to address durability. Comprehensive reference material is provided as course notes that is an excellent resource to concrete producers and associated technical personnel. The course concludes with a comprehensive exam on the subject matter covered. Those with the NRMCA Level 3 Certification obtain the NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level 4 Certification when passing this exam. However, it is not essential to have attended the NRMCA Technical Short Course to attend the Durability Course. The course provides required learning units toward the technical track of the NRMCA STEPS certification program. Persons interested in attending this course are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Now in its 14th year, NRMCA's Developing Industry’s Leaders (DIL) program is a premier career development tool. Participants are given the opportunity to advance their leadership skills and network with peers while being mentored by NRMCA’s senior staff. The DIL agenda differs from other leadership programs in that it exposes participants to our industry’s big issues from an all-encompassing, nationwide perspective. Once selected, this year’s cohort group is expected to work over the summer via conference calls and Webinars and are required to attend ConcreteWorks in Dallas, September 28 - October 3. The program will start with a half-day launch workshop where they will also be placed in their small working research team. Over the fall and winter, the team works on their issues further.

At the 2018 NRMCA Annual Convention, they will present their findings to NRMCA’s membership. Once done, DILs are expected to make a long-term commitment to move their team’s initiative(s) forward by joining, and attending, the appropriate NRMCA committee meetings twice a year. During their second year, the year’s DIL cohort group re-forms over the summer for a two-day networking and leadership workshop, exclusively developed for them. Finally, DILs may attend NRMCA’s semi-annual Board of Directors meetings to watch senior level executives deliberate and make strategic decisions that impact the industry, both short and long term.

Participation in the DIL program is a long-term commitment for a maximum of 24 annually-selected candidates. Applications are due before Thursday, June 15.
