NPMA Endorses Sonny Perdue for Secretary of Agriculture

Last week, NPMA signed onto a letter that was sent to Senate Agriculture Committee Leadership endorsing Sonny Perdue for Secretary of Agriculture.  President Donald Trump named Sonny Perdue as his choice to head the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on January 19, 2017.  Sonny Perdue is the former Governor of Georgia with a background of growing up on a farm and being involved in several successful agribusinesses.  We anticipate Sonny Perdue will be a strong advocate for agriculture and support sensible policies concerning pesticides.

While as an industry we work very closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency due to their statutory role in regulating pesticides, it is important to note that under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) USDA has an important role to play in consultation with the registration of pesticides.  We anticipate this role to be highlighted in a Trump administration and look forward to working with a USDA led by Sonny Perdue.  In addition to FIFRA issues, NPMA works closely with other departments within the USDA including the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) for import and export treatments and the Wildlife Services for nuisance wild life issues.

Sonny Perdue is expected to begin Senate confirmation hearings in mid to late February.
