Data Exchange and Interoperability: Trends and Directions in Construction

The construction industry continues to move to the internet for project procurement and collaboration among all project stakeholders. But since application standards do not exist to make sharing data easier, data standards must be developed instead. Enter AGC and agcXML. AGC, in collaboration with public agencies like Caltrans, has been working with industry leaders and software developers to foster open data standards and interoperability for construction specific transactions. As these standards evolve it will have the effect of eliminating barriers to data sharing and processing between systems.

If you are frustrated with the challenges of keeping many of your primary information systems integrated or lack of ability to share data easily with other project participants, this session is for you. In this forward-looking session, you will hear members of the panel discuss how AGC of America is working to develop these interoperability standards. We will explore case studies such as the university-based R&D programs like the AGC Surety Connection Project at CSU Chico which involves: the creation of a simple cross-referenced XML data dictionary, expansion of formalized data tags for subcontractors and the collaboration with public entities like Caltrans and USDOT. Also learn about AGC’s engagement of Burger Consulting Group to further develop agcXML in coordination with the software development community, insurance industry (Acord) and the financial industry (XBRL).

Attendees will learn how they can align their individual IT strategies to cost effectively take advantage of data exchange and interoperability using agcXML, and how they can participate to assure their own IT systems (internal, commercial or public) are prepared to cost effectively take advantage of the opportunity open standards and interoperability brings.
