In response to the recent storm devastation along the Texas Gulf Coast and on the island of Puerto Rico, the Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors recently announced its decision to donate $100,000 to the relief efforts of Hurricane Harvey and Maria.

"In the days and weeks following Hurricane Harvey, we heard many stories from a number of our member companies about the devastation that many of their employees endured, and in many cases are still struggling to overcome," stated AGC Houston President/CEO Jerry Nevlud. "I am really proud of how our board of directors was willing to step up to support our workforce."

To that end, AGC Houston joined forces with AGC of America, which set up a call for funds through AGC Charities, encouraging companies to donate and for individuals to apply for financial help. The $100,000 pledge will be divided equally between the two hurricane relief efforts. Donations and applications are being accepted through Nov. 21, 2017. AGC Houston Chairman James Bryant, Anslow Bryant Construction, Inc. underscored the Board of Directors’ support. "We understand the extraordinary task of rebuilding that lies ahead, and while Houston has faced severe weather-related disasters in the past, industry and community have always joined together to rebuild our city and individual lives. In the past we know that our friends in Puerto Rico have stepped up to assist other cities impacted by natural disasters, and we just wanted them to know we are there for them as well."

Many AGC Houston member companies set their own internal fundraisers to help employees who suffered losses, including wages during that time. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has had to deal with this unprecedented natural disaster and its aftermath," stated Bryant. "It has taken a mental toll on so many of our neighbors, friends, family and co-workers. Whether it was being displaced from their homes, losing belongings, remediating or rebuilding their homes, or just dealing with the stress of it all."

Now, two months past the arrival and departure of Hurricane Harvey, memories of those four days of wondering "will it ever stop raining" will remain for quite a while. So will the memories remain of those who were there for those in need. "It was truly humbling to see so many acts of kindness during and after the storm and we are all so proud of this city’s incredible spirit," added Nevlud.
