At NENA’s NG9-1-1 Standards & Best Practices Conference, you will gain an understanding of the world that is made possible by Next Generation 9-1-1 and help make it so.
#NENASBP is a conference unlike any other. It is an interactive, informative, attendee-driven event where you not only learn about the standards that are spurring the development and implementation of NG9-1-1 technology and operations best practices, but also create the guidelines, resources, and documents that enable NG services, systems, and PSAPs to reach their full potential.
Join us in Orlando from January 21-24 and be part of the solution! With your peers from across the 9-1-1 universe, you’ll discuss and work to address the most pressing NG-related issues, including: GIS and NG-data needs; location services and accuracy; resiliency and interoperability; governance and funding; telecommunicator SOPs; procurement and transition planning; security and resiliency; apps and the Internet of Things; multimedia messaging and accessibility; hiring and training; and the evolution of 9-1-1 center supervision and management.
No other event provides you with the opportunity to shape the future of 9-1-1 and impact public safety for decades to come! Don’t miss your chance to be part of it!

With over 80% of 9-1-1 calls now coming from cell phones, PSAPs face new challenges related to abandoned calls and location accuracy. However, there are solutions that enable your PSAP to overcome these challenges while increasing productivity and saving more lives in the process.
Attend this webinar and discover what is possible with the NG9-1-1 functionality available today. We’ll discuss abandoned calls and their impact on call takers, and reveal solutions that remove their burden. Next, we’ll describe how enabled smartphones and 9-1-1 call handling solutions with integrated RapidSOS capability can provide faster, more accurate location information. Finally, you will understand why the concern that "Uber can find me but 9-1-1 can’t," is really no longer valid.

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), postponed the nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) until October 3 due to ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Florence.
The WEA portion of the test commences at 2:18 p.m. EDT, and the EAS portion follows at 2:20 p.m. EDT. The test will assess the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine whether improvements are needed.
October 3 was the previously scheduled back-up date for the test, which was originally set up for Thursday, September 20. A backup date is always planned in case of widespread severe weather or other significant events on the primary test date. FEMA and the nation's emergency management community remain committed to the life-saving activities occurring through parts of North Carolina and South Carolina.

The Federal Communications Commission’s Disability Advisory Committee is hosting an education day for 9-1-1 professionals to discover the importance and opportunities of implementing Real-Time-Text (RTT). Attend online or in-person to learn:
The FCC provided its Report and Order (R&O) regarding the transition to Real-Time Text (RTT) in late 2016 identifying a requirement for Tier 1 wireless carriers to provide at least one RTT capable handset option by December 31, 2017. In general, traffic generated by RTT capable handsets will be converted by the wireless carrier to TTY so legacy PSAPs can receive the call using legacy TTY devices through either E9-1-1 or transitional NG9-1-1 systems. As a service to be requested, currently there is no process to determine if a wireless carrier is RTT capable in a serving area, to verify that a NG9-1-1 PSAP is capable of receiving native RTT, and there is no criteria or method for the PSAP to notify the wireless carriers of their readiness.
Volunteers are sought to participate in the PSAP Guidelines for RTT Readiness Work Group. While no specific knowledge is necessary to join the work group, subject matter experts from the PSAP, carrier, accessibility, CPE, and network provider communities are desired to ensure the best understanding of industry needs for the creation of proper implementation guidelines.
The PSAP Guidelines for RTT Readiness Work Group plans to meet Fridays at 11AM Eastern, starting on October 5. Click here to join.
The current 9-1-1 Suicide Prevention Standard published by NENA is due for revision. The NENA Suicide Prevention Work Group is, therefore, resuming soon. This will be an important revision process since several changes are needed to assure best possible care for those 9-1-1 callers at imminent risk of suicide. This standard will pursue inclusion of critical information about Crisis Text Line, terms for optimizing collaboration with National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and other accredited crisis call centers, and other changes. 9-1-1 professionals and mental health professionals are urged to join with other stakeholders as members of the work group to update this standard.
