NENA dispatch
Latest News

NENA applauds the introduction of the 911 Supporting Accurate Views of Emergency Services (911 SAVES) Act. The bill would correct the federal government’s occupational classification of 9-1-1 professionals and accurately recognize them as an essential part of the public safety community.

On March 7, Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) – a former 9-1-1 dispatcher herself – and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced this zero-cost measure that would direct the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to reclassify 9-1-1 telecommunicators and dispatchers in the federal government’s Standard Occupation Classification System.

NENA President Jamison Peevyhouse said, "We applaud Rep. Torres, a longtime supporter of the 9-1-1 community, and Rep. Fitzpatrick for their leadership on this issue. NENA and its members have long advocated for an accurate statistical classification for 9-1-1 professionals to support critical research into the mental and physical impacts of 9-1-1 jobs. We urge all members of Congress to support this non-partisan, cost-free measure that reflects the respect and support the American public has for its 9-1-1 professionals, who answer more than 240 million calls for help every year."

Contact your Member of Congress and Senators and encourage them to support this legislation!

Document Announcements

The NENA Hearing Standard for Public Safety Telecommunicators is available for Public Review and Comment. This document is provided to assist PSAPs in establishing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant hearing standards for  telecommunicators. Telecommunicators receive and process audible information from various devices, and must be able to differentiate and process numerous non-verbal audible alarms and indicators. Therefore, the standard has been created to assist managers in developing minimum hearing standards required to perform telecommunicator job functions.

Download the document for review and submit your comments here. All comments are due by midnight Eastern on  March 27, 2019. Contact the NENA Committee Resource Manager with any questions or concerns.

Washington Briefing

On Friday, the FCC proposed a vertical (or "z-axis") location accuracy metric of plus or minus three meters relative to the handset for 80% of indoor wireless 9-1-1 calls. The Commission tentatively concluded that such a location accuracy metric—within three meters above or below the phone—would be sufficiently accurate to identify the caller’s floor level in most cases and would be technically feasible under the timeframes established in the Commission’s Enhanced 9-1-1 rules.

"NENA applauds the FCC’s adoption of an NPRM on vertical location-accuracy metrics," said the association's Government Affairs Director, Dan Henry. "9-1-1 location-accuracy improvements—especially those that allow 9-1-1 to dispatch field responders to a specific floor in a building—will enable more exact emergency response and save countless lives when implemented. NENA thanks the FCC for its continued leadership on this critical issue."
