Association Business

As the 9-1-1 association, standards-development work is a foundational element of NENA’s leadership role in the public-safety community. To help improve and expand our standards-development efforts, NENA has recently completed a restructuring of the NENA Development Group—the volunteer-led committees and working groups that create NENA's standards and other documents.

This restructure sees several new committees formed, including groups devoted to 9-1-1 security and resiliency, as well as a 100 percent increase in 9-1-1-center-focused committees. As with all NENA committees and working groups, these new committees are composed of operations and technical professionals from multiple organizations, exemplifying the forward-focused, collaborative approach that has always been a hallmark of NENA's development process.

The restructure promises additional improvements, including a reduction in the time necessary to introduce new documents and an even greater focus on the issues that matter most to NENA's members.

Document Announcements

The NENA Standard for 9‑1‑1 Call Processing standardizes the method of call handling across jurisdictional boundaries and will provide consistency in the processing of emergency and non‑emergency calls and improve service to the public. You can view the document and submit comments here.

All comments are due by midnight Eastern on January 14, 2019. Contact the NENA Committee Resource Manager with any questions or concerns.

NENA Standard Managers Guide to Title II: Direct Access assists managers in bringing PSAPs into compliance with the ADA. Utilizing this standard will enhance the quality of service provided to the public, including the estimated 38 million people in the United States who have hearing loss. It is important to remember that the DOJ is the only agency that can determine if the PSAP is in compliance. Therefore, the elements within this standard are to be viewed as "minimum standards," and agencies are encouraged to seek additional information or advice (i.e.: best practices) in addition to this standard.

The NENA Information Document for GIS Data Stewardship for Next Generation 9-1-1 assists GIS and PSAP staff in understanding and adopting best practices related to managing specific GIS datasets in support of NG9-1-1 deployments. You can view the document and submit comments here.

All comments are due by midnight Eastern on December 31, 2018. Contact the NENA Committee Resource Manager with any questions or concerns.

Having adjudicated all comments, the subject document is now considered "stable." Per NENA IPR, Section 4.5 a "Stable Form Notice" is being issued and is shown here.
