Presenting a session at NENA 2018 is an excellent opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with an enthusiastic audience of 9-1-1 professionals who are eager to gain and share information. To meet the expectations and needs of our attendees, your session must be engaging, informative and applicable to a diverse audience with a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds.

Your proposal will be evaluated by how well the session will deliver practical skills, knowledge and resources that meet one of the following audience needs:

  • Empower attendees to overcome issues they are dealing with today;
  • Prepare attendees for near-term issues for which they should be planning; or
  • Challenge attendees to think about advances in technology and public safety that may one day impact 9-1-1, and what that means for them right now.

How is the NPAC valuable to my agency? The Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC) gives user access to the most current and accurate database of US ported phone numbers. Law enforcement agencies (LEA) and PSAPs access NPAC data through the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) service, a free phone-based system, or the Enhanced Law Enforcement Platform (ELEP), a fee-based, online search alternative. These services allow users to access the service provider contact information associated with a specific phone number.

Why does my agency need to register? iconectiv, a leader in telecom technology, is the next NPAC administrator. In order to avoid any service disruption following the transition to the iconectiv NPAC, all law enforcement and public safety users must register by December 31, 2017 with iconectiv. The cutover from the existing provider to iconectiv will take place in March 2018.

How does my agency register? Registration is free and begins by IVR and ELEP users contacting ivr@iconectiv.numberportability.com or ELEP@iconectiv.numberportability.com to request a registration form.

Bottom line up front: ALL Wi-Fi access points, routers, and devices (computers, phones, etc.) contain a major vulnerability that can allow an attacker to decrypt traffic. Until patches are in place, all Wi-Fi networks should be treated as untrusted, and internal resources should require separate authentication and encryption for access. Other mitigations are also recommended.

What's going on: On Sunday, October 15th social media reports circulated indicating that disclosure of a major Wi-Fi vulnerability was forthcoming. Subsequently, security researchers, government responders, and major Wi-Fi manufacturers provided a coordinated disclosure that confirmed the extent and severity of the flaw.

NENA is issuing a challenge to each chapter to increase the number of ENPs in the state (or province) between now and this coming June! The two winning chapters will each receive one free ENP Application (valued at $420) for either the Winter 2019 or Spring 2019 exam window. Here’s how it works:

  • Each newly-certified ENP during the Fall '17, Winter '18, and Spring '18 exam periods will be counted toward the chapter total.
  • The chapter with the most new ENPs and the chapter that has the highest proportional increase in ENPs will each win.
  • Winners will be announced at the NENA 2018 Conference & Expo in June.
Now it's time to get out there and start promoting the ENP Certification Program! Good luck!
