Five emergency call takers have been selected to receive Friends of 9-1-1’s first Telecommunicator Continuing Education Scholarships. Each scholarship provides complimentary registration to the NENA 2014 Conference & Expo and a one-day, pre-conference course of choice at NENA 2014. It also includes a travel stipend of $500, bringing the scholarship’s total value to around $1,600.

The Friends of 9-1-1 scholarship recipients were selected for their work as exceptional emergency call takers with at least one year of experience and were in good standing with their employer.

This year’s winners of the Telecommunicator Continuing Education Scholarships are:
  1. Stacy Buffa – Emergency Dispatcher – South East Regional Emergency Services Authority – Roseville, MI
  2. Amanda Hammer – Communications Specialist II – City of McKinney – McKinney, TX
  3. Kellee Konieczny – 911 Public Safety Dispatcher and Certified Training Officer – Village of Romeoville Police Department – Romeoville, IL
  4. Dana Vander Meer – 911 Dispatcher / Call Taker – Sumter County Sheriff's Office – Bushnell, FL
  5. Brandy Warthman – 911 Emergency Dispatcher – Licking County Government – Newark, OH
"Being a 9-1-1 call taker is an extremely pressure-packed job," explained Brian Fontes, CEO of NENA – The 9-1-1 Association. "It requires a variety of skills gained through training and experience. We are proud to recognize Stacy, Amanda, Kellee, Dana, and Brandy for their exceptional work and to support their continued 9-1-1 education."

According to Fontes, the Friends of 9-1-1 program was established in 2013 by NENA to both improve 9-1-1 service to the public, as well as provide opportunities to say "thank you" to the 9-1-1 professionals like Stacy, Amanda, Kellee, Dana, and Brandy, who serve as the public’s first line of emergency help.

The scholarship recipients will also be recognized at the NENA 2014 Conference & Expo in Nashville from June 14-19.
