NENA Responds to FCC Technology Transitions Policy Task Force Public Notice

NENA recently expressed its support for an FCC action that will preserve 9-1-1 service for consumers as the public-switched telephone network transitions to all-IP service. In a Public Notice, the Commission’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force seeks comment on plans to allow local telephone companies to begin transitioning pilot markets to all-IP service. As part of that the transition, the Task Force also proposes to trial the deployment of Next Generation 9-1-1 service by some carriers. Next Generation 9-1-1 will dramatically expand the capabilities of local 9-1-1 centers using secure, private IP networks that will someday accept text, images, and video calls in addition to voice. Many 9-1-1 authorities have already begun deploying infrastructure to support NG9-1-1 service, but no carriers have yet deployed NG9-1-1 service for consumers.
