NENA is pleased that President Obama signed into law the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 on Wednesday, February 22. This important legislation provides $115m for Next Generation 9-1-1 and begins a multi-year process of building a public safety broadband network that must interconnect with NG9-1-1 systems. Additionally, the law requires studies examining current 9-1-1 fees and the costs associated with Next Generation 9-1-1 – valuable information that will allow Congress to address NG9-1-1 system development, deployment, and maintenance funding issues. Undoubtedly, this significant legislation is a positive step towards providing better service to all Americans who reach out to 9-1-1 in times of need.
