The NCJFCJ recently published their annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Fact sheet. Included are special sections on domestic violence as it relates to communities of color, individuals who are disabled or affected by mental illness, children, LGBTQ victims and tribal communities.

Last Friday, President Obama signed a bill into law that establishes a new Commission on Native Children. The 11-person commission will include experts in juvenile justice, social work, education, and mental and physical health.

In just the last month or so, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) joined a growing list of national organizations calling for an end to the solitary confinement of young people in this country. The AAP endorsed the Stop Solitary for Kids campaign’s position statement.

This paper shows how the science of child development can be leveraged to strengthen and improve the public child welfare system so that it can better support the children, families and communities it serves.

A new long-term study recently launched at 19 research sites around the country and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will collect significant data on normal, healthy teen behavior and its impact on neurological, social, emotional, and cognitive development. It also will examine some of the unhealthy and risky behaviors indicative of those experimental teenage years.

She is a past Commissioner on the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Commission on the Status of Latinas in the Legal Profession and is a board certified attorney/specialist in the area of Child Welfare Law by the National Association of Counsel for Children.
