To make learning memorable and cool, entrepreneur Scott Steward had his students in Chicago learn by using their mobile devices for "gamification," where no one feels ashamed to get something right or wrong."

Conference attendees experienced the appeal of gamification by playing a quick game at Steward’s session, "Is There an App for That? How to Monetize Your Idea for a Mobile App."

For Steward, co-founder of  Project Tech Teens, the goals of his innovative curriculum include making science and math fun, creating a community of developers in underserved communities, developing the next generation of entrepreneurs and increasing the number of African-Americans enrolled in STEM majors in college.

As of today, 1.4 million jobs exist in technology -- everything from configuring computers to setting up Wi-Fi.

"I hear the conversations in our community. We want to get into technology, but we are afraid. We have yet to scratch the surface of what we can do with technology," said Steward. "Few of us are using our devices as streams of revenue or to empower ourselves."
Steward, who taught himself how to code and develop an app, said anyone can learn.
