As of June 2013, LinkedIn reports more than 225 million acquired users in more than 200 countries and territories.  Why should LinkedIn be important to you? Because 60 million other professionals are using it. It is 'THE' social media site for business networking. And most importantly, it is a growing phenomenon that our career or business success depends on managing our own personal brand. LinkedIn gives you an excellent platform to do just this.

"Primp Your Profile," presented Thursday, is an interactive session presented by Dell recruiters globally  that helps students improve their personal brand on LinkedIn by providing tips, best practices and behaviors to help students be more marketable in the competitive labor market.

Chelsea Killough, Leadership Development Program, Dell Commercial, gave a gem-filled presentation on how to nurture your LinkedIn profile, build your network and then leverage it. "Your personal brand is your reputation and everything you do or don’t do," said Killough. "It's the essence of who you are and what you stand for."

She shared tips on how to maximize your profile, share updates, obtain the latest industry news and follow thought-leaders or companies of interest. Killough also underscored the value of leveraging your LinkedIn network in a job search to connect with university alumni, past and current co-workers, and search for friends or colleagues employed by companies you are targeting.

Bottom line: Start by completing your profile. LinkedIn estimates you’re up to 40 times more likely to turn up in a search if your profile is complete.
