Julian Duncan was introduced to the NBMBAA during his first year of
business school at Rice University when Houston hosted the national conference.
"I secured an internship with IBM at the Career Expo," says Duncan. "The
following year at the conference in the San Diego I connected with Nike and my career
journey began."
As global brand director for Nike Basketball, Duncan focuses on driving
the Lebron James business globally. In the "Charting A Successful Game Plan In
the New World of Marketing" Meet the Experts session by Rice University, Duncan
outlined the importance as marketers to know your brand, your strengths and
identify the things that you don’t do really well to make strategic decisions
about raising your level of competence. "This is what takes to create a
differentiated advantage," he stressed. "The only way to get there is to be
introspective or lean on mentors or accountability partners to help you
identify these areas and create solutions."
Co-presenter Constance Porter, Ph.D., accentuated how great people
strive for diverse experiences to reach growing audiences in this new world of
marketing. "It’s about being valuable and relevant," said Porter, visiting
assistant professor of marketing, Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice
University. "The new corporate specs for
chief marketing officers are professionals with a range of experiences,
knowledge and insights. They want you to know what you’ve done to break the
ground or how you move from the core to the edge. Today’s differentiator is
tomorrow’s common sense, think about how to sustain your greatness over time." |
