More than 25,000 social media posts about Dell are made every day, and the company is interacting with these customers and potential customers to create relationships that will ensure sustained success.

Amy Heiss, manager of the social media command center at Dell, and Keisha Keyes, senior member of the social media analytics team at Dell, presented 10 tips for entrepreneurs who want to improve their online presence.

1. Integrate social media into the overall business plan. Make it a core component of the plan.

2. Tie social media to your company’s and customers’ objectives.

3. Identify and target your specific communities. Focus on social media your customers are using. Sign up for free listing tools: Twitter Search, Google Alerts and Social Mention.

4. Engage your audience. Be authentic, personal, transparent, honest, inclusive, educational and conversational.

5. Identify good content to share by looking at industry publications, customer blogs, thought leader articles or partner publications.

6. Vary your content by using online curated sites for relevant content: SmartBrief, StumbleUpon, Techmeme and LinkedIn Today.

7. Listen to customers and determine content that is most relevant to them.

8. Adopt a relationship mindset. Don’t start your conversations by trying to sell – add value, ask opinions, celebrate success and address concerns.

9. Build stronger relationships by taking advantage of face-to-face encounters at events such as conferences by planning get-togethers for followers.

10. Measure the success of your social media based on your initial goals: number of followers, re-tweets, number of customer service calls handled online versus expensive telephone calls, surveys answered, etc.
