A day of learning and exploring opportunities to expand entrepreneurial and leadership skills began with a moment of silence to honor the victims and families of September 11, 2001.

Following the remembrance, Kim Wilson, vice president of strategic program initiatives for the National Black MBA Association welcomed and applauded the attendees for "owning their potential and their success." She added, "We’d like to think the NBMBAA has played a small, but integral, part in your success."

Brief remarks by Darrell James, president of the Houston Chapter of NBMBAA, and Petrick Adams, director of strategic services for FedEx, focused on the contributions of the association’s 35 years of national educational conferences. Both speakers shared personal and corporate stories of courage that resulted in opportunities and accomplishments.

The accomplishments of John W. Daniels Jr., Quarles and Brady LLP were recognized as Jesse J. Tyson, interim president and chief executive officer of NBMBAA presented the Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Daniels for his commitment and support of the African-American business community.

"At a young age, I strove to help others and that is the legacy I want to leave," says Daniels. "The important, secret ingredient to successful entrepreneurship is to create something for others, not just for you."

The breakfast also included a talk by Judy Smith, author, crisis-management expert and co-executive producer of the TV show "Scandal."
