Business Productivity Tools

A host of free business apps were showcased during Thursday’s "Business Productivity Tools" discussion. Presenter Otis Collier, a recruiting and personal branding consultant, dazzled the audience with an array of business applications to improve productivity and profitability.

Collier reviewed Google apps for businesses such as Google Site, which allows small business owners to create an intranet and the versatile Gmail, which allows users the ability to host a business website on Gmail.

"You can do a lot with Gmail," said Collier, who worked the audience with expertise and humor. "You can chat with people and you can instant message. There is a calendar feature you can share with employees. If you have less than 10 email addresses, it’s free," he said. Gmail also allows users to send text reminders to their phone.

He urged NBMBAA members to get a Google phone number, which allows one number to ring at multiple places.

Collier also revealed his WordPress website, currently under construction, to show to create a professional looking website without paying a dime. "If you can write a document, you can build a website," he said. Learn how by going to WordPress.TV. If paying for a website, limit cost to $500. Monthly hosting fees can be as low as $3 monthly at such sites as host.gator.com.

Other recommended tools included:
  • A free beta version of Office 2013, at http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/en
  • Expensify allows users to take photos of receipts that are automatically uploaded into a document that is searchable.
  • Pixlr, a web based tool with features similar to Adobe Photoshop.
  • FreshBooks, an invoicing program that will alert you when the recipient opened the invoice.
  • Team Viewer, which provides users remote access into any computer with permission.
  • Appointy, online scheduling software that allows clients to book online and make advance payments. It also integrates with Google calendar.
