The path to an MBA is often focused on career – finding the best job, the best title, the best business opportunity. While this focus is admirable, Sherice Torres, senior vice president of Global Home Entertainment and adult-brand licensing for MTV Networks Consumer Products and owner of BadAssMama Enterprises, says that we should focus on a bigger and better life, not a bigger and better life.

If you understand that all of the planning in the world can fall apart with one event – starting a family, illness of a parent, or any other instance of life intervening – you realize that a key to a successful life is resilience. "Resilience means bouncing back even better than before," explains Torres. To be resilient, however, it is important to understand what you need in your life to make it better. She suggests starting the process by answering these questions:

*What is your ideal week?
List the activities or components of a week that enables you to be your best. While the answers differ for each individual, examples of items to include are: quiet time, drop children off at school, telecommute one day, weekly meal with family or regular exercise.

*What are your deal breakers?

Know what items are absolutely required for you to live your best life. Examples include: No interruptions on weekends, family dinners twice a week, autonomy, specific salary level or no more than three days of consecutive travel in a month.

*How do you define success?
Too many people tie the definition of success to a job, says Torres. Think in terms of your whole life. Examples of answers include: time to recharge, holistic health, connection with family, strong personal relationships, enjoyable job that provides financial security, and joy.

When defining success be sure to address personal, professional, spiritual, family, relationship and self-care, recommends Torres. Remember that each person’s best life differs from others, she says. "No one else lives your life, so take the time to set your rules to guide your life."
