The NAFA Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization formed in 1976 to support the fleet industry, recently implemented bylaws changes that created a new Board structure and stronger ties to its sister organization, NAFA Fleet Management Association (NAFA). The NAFA Foundation supports the advancement of the automotive industry through the promotion and encouragement of education and research projects; and receiving, administering, and disbursing grants and contributions.

Features in this edition: In partnership with the Ad-Hoc Highly Autonomous Vehicles (HAV) Data Access Coalition, NAFA sent a letter on January 25 to Senate Commerce Committee leaders expressing support for Section 15 of S. 1885, the American Vision for Safer Transportation through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies Act (AV START Act).
 
Federal regulators have granted the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) a 90-day electronic logging device (ELD) exemption for rentals not exceeding 30 days. The exemption took effect January 19 and will last until April 19.
 
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is partnering with a broad coalition including industry, academia, states and local governments, safety advocates, and transportation stakeholders to encourage the safe development, testing and deployment of automated vehicle technology.
 
 
 
   
In a report released in late January, the Senate Transport Committee shed light on the current multi-departmental approach to the autonomous vehicle issue and problems associated with it. Segments of the government are urging caution in autonomous vehicles while others are pushing for more innovation in the hotly-contested space.

NAFA was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic passing of NAFA Regular Member Michael G. Baessler on January 12. He was 67. He is survived by his wife Lauren and four children.
