Information Age — Drones have the potential to revolutionize supply chain and logistics, a notion not lost on retail behemoths Amazon and Walmart, which have been trialling warehouse and home delivery projects for well over a year.

More recently though, drone strategies have been taken to the next level, with Amazon announcing a partnership with the British government to run tests to explore the feasibility of using drones to deliver small parcels.

Reuters — U.S. consumer prices were unchanged in July but a rise in industrial output and home building suggested a pickup in economic activity that could allow the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this year.

Tuesday's economic reports came as influential New York Fed President William Dudley said the U.S. central bank could raise interest rates next month, citing a tightening labor market that he said was starting to spur faster wage growth.

MHI Blog — First released in 2014, the U.S. Roadmap for Material Handling & Logistics established a baseline of key disruptors for the field and projected key factors for the industry over the next decade. At the time, the document was comprehensive, but the overwhelming rate of change in the field and factors that affect the field, like technology, has prompted the creators to work on a second edition of the Roadmap.

MHL News — Despite stakeholder pressure, most companies still do not have a comprehensive understanding of the performance, risks and sustainability impacts of their supply chains, according to a report recently released by EY.

EY Climate Change and Sustainability Services collaborated with the UN Global Compact on the report, entitled "The State of Sustainable Supply Chains"  in an effort to better understand how companies are managing their supply chains in ways that support the objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.

Industryweek — The next technology wave has hit the manufacturing industry. But if you think about it, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) isn't a trend at all. It's a natural evolution of the automation and connectivity that has been a part of the plant environment for decades. IIoT takes that concept and extends communication and connectivity to people and systems within the manufacturing enterprise.

Ebnonline — Customers today are used to having things when they want them, how they want them. With the consumerization of the supply chain comes the customer expectation that they will receive the package as quickly as possible, if not on the exact same day as the order was placed.

While same day shipping is great for delivering a positive customer experience, it does place quite a strain on resources for the shipper and the supply chain manager. Not only does it mean the shipper has to act more quickly to set the process in motion, it also means having to ensure that logistically, same-day shipping can even occur.

Ebnonline — Today's supply chain is powered by people. The current talent shortage, however, is making it difficult to build and maintain a high-performing workforce, especially as omnichannel distribution continues to grow and unique new demands arise for 3PL providers. Efficient, profitable omnichannel logistics require flexibility and agility throughout the supply chain-especially when it comes to optimizing your workforce.

MHI Blog — As the Olympics come to a close, the heat of competition dies down and some (*cough, cough* me) become a bit reflective. Networks spend all this time showing us backstory and talking about the rush of victory and the agony of defeat. But what I want to know is: How did all the stuff they use get there?

I mean, I can't even get myself and one bag home for Christmas without missing something. I end up shipping stuff back out to myself later on in the break and around that time, shipping is a nightmare. So how do Olympic teams get all their stuff to a foreign country in the right city at the right time? Here's what a little Googling taught me.

Maritime Executive — Container tracking has been around a long time in various guises, but today it is part of a much bigger trend towards machine-to-machine (M2M) telematics and sensors which connect and monitor the things in the Internet of Things (IoT).

That trend is impacting many consumer, business and industrial markets - from connected cars, to home heating can be controlled from the other side of the world via mobile phone, real-time monitoring of heavy equipment working deep in mines and quarries, intelligent buoys that can sense and report on fish stocks out at sea and devices that track elephants on the move across remote parts of Africa, to name but a few.
