MHI announces the finalists for the MHI Innovation Award competition. The MHI Innovation Award serves to educate and provide valuable insights on the latest manufacturing and supply chain innovative products and services. This award will be given to winners in two categories: Best New Innovation and Best Innovation of an Existing Product. The winner will be announced during the MODEX Keynote on Tuesday, March 18.

The United States has the chance to "beat other countries in the race for the next wave of high-tech manufacturing jobs," President Obama said in his State of the Union speech. Obama described several new manufacturing innovation institutes and pledged to launch more.

Today, the U.S. Roadmap for Material Handling & Logistics was released. Published onwww.MHLroadmap.org, the 67-page Roadmap’s report and action plan will help the industry determine how logistics and supply chain trends and challenges can be turned into action plans to develop needed capabilities in the U.S. between now and 2025.

‘Tis the season for consultants, analysts and vendors to offer their views and advice on supply chain trends for 2014 and beyond.  One of those trend monitors, Richard Powell, managing director and co-founder of U.K. supply chain consultancy Crimson & Co., suggests that supply chains need to figure out how to use "big data" and brace for the effects of 3D printing technology.

In looking at the show floor seminar offerings for the upcoming MODEX expo in Atlanta, it looks like Omni-Channel will be a big topic this year as retailers struggle to determine how to design integrated technology systems that support a range of physical, online and mobile sales channels.

Business interruption and supply chain risks remain atop a list of the major hazards drawing companies’ attention this year, according to the recently released Allianz Risk Barometer, a survey of some 400 of the firm’s corporate insurance experts from more than 30 countries. Insurers are starting to pay much more attention to supply chain when underwriting industrial risks, the global insurer says.

MHI announces the award of the 2013 grants for material handling and logistics research projects. The research grants are provided by MHI through its College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE). MHI and CICMHE awarded $100,000 to fund three types of research proposals.

The Technical Career Education Program (TCEP) of MHI has a mission to provide instructional support to educational institutions seeking to provide training for entry level students in material handling, logistics and the supply chain.

TCEP is taking on the major initiative to build the "Workforce of the Future" and provide training so that young persons entering the workforce, the unemployed, the under-employed and job changers can begin a career in this dynamic industry. Companies can become a part of this initiative by partnering with TCEP and schools in the program.

MODEX 2014 attendees are registering in record numbers and they are ready to invest in material handling, logistics supply chain equipment and systems. A full 36% have spending plans of $1,000,000 or more over the next 18 months. An additional 30% plan to spend between $100,000 and $500,000 over the same period.

Through OSHA’s Alliance with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), OSHA is continuing to work with ASSE to support North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week on May 4-10, 2014.

NAOSH Week, an annual campaign led by the ASSE and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), is aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of occupational safety and health. The theme for the 2014 campaign is "Workplace Safety Works for Everyone."
