President's Message

Hello and welcome to KCMPI’s Newsletter.

My year-and-a-half of being your President is coming to an end, and what a 1 ½ yr. term it has been.  I’ve been very honored to serve as the President of this great chapter, and I’m looking forward to my term as Immediate Past-President starting in July.  I have about 2.5 months left in my current position and I want you to know that your entire Board of Directors is continuing to work diligently to perform the duties you elected us to complete. You have a terrific current Board, and the new Board taking over in July will be full of energy and will continue the legacy of keeping KCMPI in the forefront of the Hospitality industry.

We have just completed one of the most successful PEC in years, and I extend a big thank you to the Leads Sarah Morrissey and Lynn Gross, the VP of Education Shari Hockenbery, and all the others that worked so diligently on this great education program. We had one of the largest registration numbers we have ever had, and the speakers were full of knowledge and encouragement.

KCMPI has two events left in this term and I want to encourage you to register for both.  First coming on May 16 at the Johnson County Community College will be our Catering & Restaurant Showcase and it will have an educational component with CEUs available. You don’t want to miss this event. Then to finish up this term, on June 16 at Harrah’s North Casino will be our Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet. This will be a good time to say good-bye to the current Board and welcome in the new Board of 2016-17. A wonderful night is planned!

Now, it is time to say good-bye to my privilege of serving as your President. The time has really flown by, full of challenges, full of emails, full of fires to put out, and some to light, but mostly full of fond memories. From many of the Past Presidents sending me words of encouragement when I took office early, from all the wonderful volunteers that have worked so hard on each event, from the entire Board of Directors, from our new Chapter Administrator Aesha Beattle, you all have been so kind and easy to have worked for. The position of President is one of leadership and service, and at the end of my term I know I can look back and embrace the fact that I did the best I could, and that I had so much help all along the way.

As I prepare to step away from this office I want to say THANK YOU KCMPI for allowing me to serve you. It has been an honor!

Phil Allemang, CAS
President

Editor's Note

When deciding whether or not to open an e-mail or click through on a web page, I am always drawn to the tag lines like "6 Essential Qualities to Success" or "5 Ways to Clean Your House Faster."  It’s a proven marketing strategy to get those clicks. First, it sounds like a quick read and second it’s going to improve my life in some way. So I recently clicked on an article titled something like "5 ways to improve your newsletters".  Or something like that.

I was happy to see we’re doing most of the things the article suggested: It’s unique to our industry and our interests at KCMPI. We humanize it by having personal touches like "News & Notes" and photos from the events. We keep the content concise and the copy minimal so it’s a quick read. It also comes out on a consistent schedule six times a year. We do get above average open and clicks.

One thing I’m not sure we do a good enough job on is having a call to action!  So here are my calls to action this month:
  • Feel free to submit your news directly to me and send me a couple of pictures to go with it.
  • I would love to add a column, written by a KCMPI planner, who could review a meeting app or website each issue in the coming year.  Anyone interested?  You can earn CMP credits!
Thanks for reading and happy Spring!

Upcoming Events

2016 Catering & Restaurant Showcase

By: Corey Ringh

Mark your calendar for the Kansas City metropolitan area’s premier catering event of the year, being held at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) on Monday, May 16 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The 4th Annual Catering & Restaurant Showcase is hosted by JCCC and sponsored by KCMPI. This unique networking event is a perfect opportunity for restaurant management, caterers, florists, and hospitality industry suppliers and planners to rub elbows and explore a myriad of business opportunities. Participants will be treated to a variety of different food and drink samples provided by some of the area’s most sought-after restaurants and catering companies, so plan on skipping lunch and joining us for the day!

An education program led by Janis Kliethermes, President of Etiquette Kansas City, will be held from 10:00-11:15 am in Room 145 in the Hospitality Culinary Academy at JCCC. The topic of this year’s educational program, "Dining: Why Deals are Made & Lost at the Table," will provide insight on how to ensure the best possible outcome when entertaining clients. It’s not just about the plates and forks! As busy professionals, many of us entertain clients all the time. We know the importance of a successful business dinner and how it must go perfectly! Janis will share the keys to achieving just that in order to build stronger customer relationships to improve your business. The education session will begin at 10:00 am at Johnson County Community College, followed by the delightful food samples of the best area caterers and restaurants.

The 2015 Showcase closed to rave reviews about the opportunity to network with peers and taste great food. By attending as a guest or participating as a vendor, you can take advantage of all the benefits this popular event has to offer. Registration is open and can be accessed by Clicking Here!

Testimonial:

"We participated in the Restaurant & Catering Showcase and it was a great way to get the word out about The Bistro, our new restaurant at the Courtyard, as well as all of the new updates to our hotels in Shawnee, the Hampton Inn and the Courtyard! The traffic flow was excellent and we were able to introduce ourselves to many new customers and other vendors who attended the show. We will definitely participate in the Showcase again next year!" said JoLynn Brosnan, Director of Sales, Courtyard Marriott Shawnee and Hampton Inn Shawnee.
