Industry leaders and members met in Tokyo for the sixth annual event

After breaking its attendance record in its fifth year, ISTAT Asia achieved another healthy number of attendees, drawing nearly 700 attendees for its sixth annual event. This year, ISTAT Asia took place at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan on 17-19 May, and attendees from numerous countries gathered to discuss, contemplate, and celebrate Asia’s growing status in the aviation
industry.

Sessions this year included the new ISTAT Appraisers 101 with speakers John Vitale and John Trevett, a Japanese bank panel, a debate session with Airbus and Boeing, a Financing Debate, the MRJ Presentation, and the ISTAT Women's Networking Reception held at the beautiful Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills Tower.

Details for ISTAT Asia 2017 will be forthcoming later this year. After this year’s massive attendance numbers, ISTAT Asia is poised to grow even more in the future. Look for more ISTAT Asia coverage in the Summer edition of Jetrader.

Presentations and photos from ISTAT Asia are now available via the ISTAT mobile app and the ISTAT website.

The wheel of fortune ratcheted to a stop in 2015 with U.S. airlines perched at its top. The bad times were behind them, including the ugly bankruptcies and negotiations for survival. In 2015, airlines no longer saw one-third of their operating cost going to pouring $3.25 per gallon kerosene into their planes. Oil prices were on a nearly steady downward pace towards $30 a barrel. Airlines in the U.S. consumed 8,923 million gallons of Jet A in 2015, nearly a 4 percent increase over 2014, but paid 36 percent less for that fuel.

In the mid-1980s, more than three decades after Mao Zedong’s communist revolution, David Dixon was one of the first capitalists allowed by a wary Beijing to fly over China in a business jet — with an escort.

Three decades later, China has embraced business aviation and is home to Asia’s largest business-jet fleet. After an extended period of rapid growth, it is experiencing growing pains that should be temporary, provided it can further relax its heavy control of its skies and airports.

The top members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee have urged their counterparts in the House of Representatives to move forward on Senate legislation to boost aviation security and authorize the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Some airplane security measures we are all too aware of—miniature bottles of shampoo and X-ray scanners, for instance—while others we know almost nothing about, including how airlines protect their in-flight networks and computer systems from interference or attack. In April, Sen. Ed Markey introduced the Cybersecurity Standards for Aircraft to Improve Resilience Act, or Cyber AIR Act, to address precisely this component of aircraft security by requiring the Federal Aviation Administration to develop cybersecurity guidelines for the aviation industry and also requiring airlines to report cyberattacks to the government.
