With close to 1,100 delegates attending ISTAT Europe in Istanbul, this 2014 European gathering was the biggest in ISTAT history and is testimony to the value that members place on their membership of this organization. The event took place from 21-23 September at the Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus. There were broad cross-sections of delegates from banks, leasing companies, law firms, MROs, airlines, aviation training establishments, remarketing and trading companies, data-providers, appraisers, manufacturers, and representatives of aviation publications.

Phase 3 of the UNHCR ‘Toys for Smiles’ project for Syrian refugee children in Jordan got off to a good start on the morning of Tuesday, 15 July. The load consisted of 3,854 toys packed in 91 boxes on five pallets.

"Here is a photo from the warehouse where the toys were packed. What I like about this is that if you look at the labels you can clearly see that the ISTAT Foundation is listed as one of the partners who are making this happen alongside entities like the UNHCR, the Scouts and Guides, and AWB.

What was also particularly neat here is that through its recent membership of Airlink, AWB managed to get an offer from Emirates to discount their cargo rate, which has ultimately resulted in the Foundation money going further so that more shipments of toys can be covered with less cash. I think we’ll call that ‘teamwork!’"

- Julian Balaam, Chair, the Humanitarian Committee of the ISTAT Foundation

By James Careless "The aviation industry is facing an aircraft retirement tsunami," said ICF International Principal Richard Brown at the 2014 Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association's (AFRA) Annual Meeting on 18 June 2014. He told AFRA delegates that the rate of aircraft retirements will reach an astounding 1,000 aircraft a year by 2024. Based on current data, AFRA expects between 1,200-1,800 aircraft to be dismantled and torn down over the next three years. However, not everyone in the aircraft recycling industry agrees with these dire predictions. Read more about the forecasts in the Fall issue of Jetrader magazine.

The Muse Here are three measures you can use in your work each day to stay ahead of the challenges that bog down many teams. As you read, consider how, if you looked at these three key performance indicators each day, your work life might transform.

Strategy+Business I’m often asked, "What makes a great leader?" Specific characteristics may vary by industry and context, but one that consistently shines through is the ability to pose meaningful—and sometimes deceptively simple—questions. Here are six that apply to anyone hoping to hone his or her leadership acumen and impact.

The Muse You’ve probably heard that part of what it takes to get promoted at work, advance in your career, and inspire others to follow you is having "executive presence" or "leadership presence." But what does that actually mean?
