IPRA Today

Illinois Park and Recreation

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

IPRA has grown through its 66-year history, adding programs and services to meet the evolving needs of membership along the way. Members have expressed interest in new services, while some services have decreased in usage over time. We are excited to shape the direction of the association by examining all we do and determining where our focus must lie to propel the membership forward. It is time to have the courage to change – the courage to re-create IPRA.

Chuck Balling, executive director of Glenview Park District, is leading a team of 23 high-performers from throughout the state. They've been exploring six keys areas of interest as members of our Strategic Planning Advisory Council. These members have utilized the 2009 Membership Survey and Efficiency Task Force Report along with additional research and study. This group will make recommendations to the board of directors on July 15 at 10 a.m. at the Wheeling Park District's Chevy Chase Golf Course. All members are invited to attend and hear presentations first hand. Information from these presentations will be available to the membership for review and comment on the IPRA website.

The IPRA Board of Directors will review and discuss recommendations during August and will move forward on recommendations to set new strategic direction for the association in September. The goal is simple – remember our traditions but not be so stuck in them to deny opportunity for progress.

-Mike Selep, Interim CEO

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Our goal is to continue to expand our leadership position by developing the next generation of leaders. To do so, we must note that times have changed and have the courage to change the way we do business at our agencies and in our association. Simply, it is time for us to have the courage to change.

Chuck Balling, executive director of Glenview Park District, has demonstrated amazing leadership by overseeing a group of 23 highly-motivated, hard-working professionals from throughout the state. I am extremely proud of the work Chuck and this group - our Strategic Planning Advisory Council (SPAC) - have done over the past several months. In a short time, they have collected and synthesized a tremendous amount of information and thoroughly explored six keys areas of interest while developing recommendations based on all of their findings.

I am encouraging all members to become involved in this process as well. The SPAC makes its formal recommendations to the board of directors at 10 a.m. on July 15 at the Wheeling Park District's Chevy Chase Golf Course. All members are invited to attend to hear the presentations first hand. Information will be made available to the membership. Please review and comment through the IPRA website to help us move our association forward.

The IPRA Board of Directors will review and discuss the recommendations along with your feedback during August and will move forward on recommendations to set strategic direction for the association in September. To continue our position as a national leader, we must make decisions that will impact the next generation of park and recreation professionals and have the courage to change.

-Carrie Haupert, Chairman of the Board

NEWS YOU CAN USE

We are pleased to tell you that we continue to make tremendous strides in the rebuilding of our great association. It is an exciting time and will continue to be as we venture toward a new strategic plan for the upcoming year and beyond.

It is the time of year to start thinking about elections. This is your opportunity to become involved in a continued transformation by being a part of the IPRA Board of Directors. We have several representative positions open, each with three-year terms - Communications & Marketing, Ethnic Minority, Facility Management and Recreation sections, and the Central and Northern districts. We must have at least two people running for each seat from each section or district. Don't just sit back and watch, we want you to get involved.

Deadline for candidate nominations are Monday, July 26. Click here for information regarding the responsibilities and commitment involved in being a member of the IPRA Board of Directors, as well as the election process. If you have any questions, please contact LoriKay Paden, chair of the IPRA Nominations and Elections Committee.

The committee found it critical to help agencies identify and achieve a high level of health and wellness for their employees and to recognize their achievements. As a result, the No Employee Left Behind (NELB) Award was created. The award includes six components for which criteria have been developed: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, environmental and spiritual. Applying agencies will receive standards and compliance guidelines, with the first awards given at the 2010 IAPD/IPRA Annual Conference.

Questions regarding the NELB award and the work of the Health & Wellness Committee can be directed to Lori Neubauer, Itasca Park District.

Join park and recreation agencies like the Waukegan Park District, Lisle Park District and Skokie Park District and participate in the IPRA Go! Program! Now in it's second year, the IPRA Go! Program allows IPRA professional members to access participating park and recreation agency facilities (fitness centers, aquatic facilities) for a reduced cost or for free.

Terms: Park and recreation agencies set their own terms, i.e. allow an IPRA member to use fitness facilities or classes at half the rate or at the employee rate. It's completely up to you!

Feedback: We'll encourage members to complete feedback forms based off their experiences at the participating facilities. See what other professionals have to say about your facilities and services!

Please get your park and recreation agency involved! Fill out a participation form and return it to IPRA - we'll add you to the list of participating agencies. Your agency will be identified as a participating member on the participant list on the IPRA website.

You can play an important role in bettering the lives of our members with your participation. Sign up today!
