President-elect Donald Trump has named Elaine Chao to his cabinet as the U.S. Department of Transportation secretary. Chao previously served as deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush and as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush. Born in Taiwan, Chao is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, and she is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky). When serving as DOT deputy secretary, Chao played an important role in the development of the ISTEA transportation bill, which included a half-cent per gallon fuel tax increase.

The University of Tennessee (UT) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation are performing a research project to determine the current practices of state DOTs regarding the blending efficiency of RAP and RAS. Survey results will be shared with industry and governmental agencies and will be used to promote recycling and sustainable paving technologies. Survey respondents can receive a complimentary copy of the final report. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

Pavement engineers have been producing long-lasting asphalt pavements since the 1960s.
Research has shown that well-constructed and well-designed flexible pavements can perform for extended periods of time. Many of these pavements in the past forty years were the products of full-depth or deep-strength asphalt pavement designs, and both have design philosophies that have been shown to provide adequate strength over extended life cycles (APA, 2002). It is significant that these pavements have endured an unprecedented amount of traffic growth. For instance, from 1970 to 1998, the average daily ton-miles of freight increased by 580 percent, and the average freight loading continues to increase 2.7 percent per year.

Asphalt is one of the indispensable materials of life in America. Want proof? Think about the fact that 93 percent of the paved roads in America are surfaced with asphalt. Get more FACTS about asphalt.
