Student data privacy was a hot topic in state legislatures again in 2016, with over 110 bills introduced in 34 states. An additional 72 bills were carried over from the 2015 legislative session. Many of these bills are similar to past legislation, but new models are beginning to emerge.

Taryn Hochleitner and Sara McClafferty from the Data Quality Campaign and Amelia Vance, NASBE director of education data and technology, will highlight lessons learned and steps state board members and other policymakers can take to move their states forward on this important issue.
