July 28, 2015: The 'E' in STEM Education: Why Engineering is Vital to Science Standards

The cry for K-12 students to have stronger STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-skills continues, yet engineering is often absent from traditional science content standards. Engineers are vital to our society. They design the technology, processes, and systems that drive our 21st century economy and meet the public's needs and wants. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) incorporates the engineering design process as core knowledge for students. This is the first time that engineering has been so prominent in K-12 science standards.
