TeachHer program participants and facilitators work on developing hands-on lesson plansThe inaugural TeachHer training session took place from August 29 - September 2, 2016 in Addis Ababa with 58 educators from six countries in Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. TeachHer is a new public-private partnership that is being spearheaded by the U.S. Mission to UNESCO, UNESCO, Microsoft, Fitbit and other NGO and private sector partners; IIE is the lead implementing partner. The goal of TeachHer is to provide a master corps of teachers, administrators and ministry education officials with the tools they need to inspire middle school girls to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Design, and Math) fields.

The training sessions were facilitated by experts from the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa, CEMASTEA (Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa), FAWE (Forum for African Women Educationalists), and Microsoft, Inc. The second TeachHer training with a focus on Central America is scheduled to take place in San Juan, Costa Rica in November. The initiative was launched in July at UNESCO headquarters in Paris with the Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden and the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.
