Seminars include campus visits with a cross-section of universities and colleges; briefings with faculty and administrators, government officials, and leading educational experts; and tours of historical and cultural sites. State Department and Airbnb Announce Partnership to Support Gilman Scholars in China

September 9, 2016 -- News

On September 12, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky will announce a new partnership to expand the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in China at an event at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. The collaboration between Airbnb and the Gilman Program supports the State Department’s goal of expanding opportunities for students of limited financial means to study abroad. The State Department is working through public-private partnerships like this one to provide more opportunities for American students to study abroad.

The Gilman Program, implemented by IIE, provides need-based scholarships to U.S. undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in study or internships abroad. Gilman scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 and students studying critical languages, including Chinese, are eligible for an additional $3,000. Airbnb is committing $80,000 per year to these scholarships, which begin this academic year.

Arsenal Football Can Help Generate Excitement for Study Abroad on Your Campus

IIE’s Generation Study Abroad welcomes the support of Station 12 and its partnership with Arsenal Football club to help extend study abroad participation to athletes and students in sports management, both underrepresented groups in study abroad, along with business and management majors. Universities can work with Arsenal and Station 12 to add a component to an existing summer program or to develop a customized stand-alone program, both of which can include:

o Talks from Arsenal’s management team

o Guest speakers from sponsors, sports psychologists, marketing agencies, football association and sports

consultants

o Service learning projects

o Classes and tours at Emirates stadium

o Inter-college scrimmages at Arsenal

o Accommodations

Cal State Long Beach professor Armando Vazquez-Ramos has created the California-Mexico Study Abroad Program. This opportunity allows undocumented students, or Dreamers, with DACA (Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals) status to go to Mexico. The program gives students time to visit their family members in various parts of the country and supplements the curriculum by enrolling them in a progressive Spanish speaking school. The U.S. State Department has launched a new website and mobile friendly resource that provides a range of vital information related to study abroad. Through clear and useful search options, students, study abroad professionals and parents can locate pertinent information, including webpages dedicated to searching for study abroad country destinations, country-specific visa information, scholarship opportunities, featured study abroad news articles, travel alerts and warnings, as well as links for students who are already abroad. To promote this new resource, the State Department encourages organizations and institutions to share this information through their social media accounts in order to better reach student populations with #StudentsAbroad.

Inside Study Abroad Launches First Podcast for Study Abroad Professionals

The podcast will feature thought-leaders, engage in debates, and share real strategies for international education professionals. Generation Study Abroad Partner Surpasses Goal and Recognizes Study Abroad at Commencement

Misericorida University, a Generation Study Abroad Commitment Partner since 2014, has seen 140% growth of their original Generation Study Abroad goal to double the number of students studying abroad or completing a service learning trip by the end of the decade. As part of a campus-wide effort to expand and improve service and study abroad experiences for students at Misericordia University, this year’s Commencement ceremonies gave special recognition to graduates who studied abroad or completed a service learning experience. Each student received a special graduation stole to wear as part of their Commencement regalia, with different colored stoles representing the country they visited.

EP-Nuffic pledges to take concrete steps to expand access and opportunities for U.S. students wishing to study in the Netherlands by removing bureaucratic obstacles, providing advisory services to U.S. institutions and individuals who wish to make contact with Dutch institutions, providing relevant information to students about settling in, studying and working in the Netherlands, and organizing activities for U.S. students. The French Embassy – Generation Study Abroad Scholarships are specifically designated for underrepresented students who have an interest in France. A total of 20 students from five campuses will receive a $2,500 French Embassy – Generation Study Abroad Scholarship. These scholarships can be used for the cost of tuition, books and travel related to study, service learning or internships abroad.

Mexico Partnership Program (open to international universities)

The Mexico Partnership Program, a component within the larger IIE Mexico Higher Education Initiative, will explore the wealth of opportunities for academic partnerships with higher education institutions in Mexico, while also confronting the challenges that have faced partnership building with the country in recent years. Participants of the program will also take part in an IIE-led delegation to Mexico City, Puebla, and Queretaro in September 2016 to meet with important stakeholders from universities, organizations and the government that deal with the Mexican higher education system.

Cuba Partnership Program

As relations continue to improve between the United States and Cuba, opportunities for increased academic partnership are growing. President Obama's historic visit to Cuba in March 2016 further signaled an easing of tensions between the two countries, which allows for greater international collaboration going forward. The Cuba Partnership Program will draw on IIE's relationship with key stakeholders in the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education and Cuban university system, experience leading high-level academic delegations, and expertise in international partnership building to provide expert guidance on U.S.-Cuba academic collaboration. The program will include a delegation to Cuba in October 2016.

Winners of the #GoStudyAbroad Campaign Announced

More than 15,000 students answered the call to #GoStudyAbroad by applying to win study abroad scholarships and travel prizes, sponsored by the Institute of International Education (IIE), AIFS Study Abroad, CET Academic Programs, Go Overseas, IFSA-Butler and STA Travel. #GoStudyAbroad was the first alumni-to- student engagement campaign of IIE’s Generation Study Abroad, Four students were selected to receive study abroad scholarships, and five study abroad alumni received travel prizes for nominating students to enter the campaign. In addition, the campaign reached nearly 4 million people across Twitter and Instagram. Thank you to those who participated in the campaign and for encouraging students to #GoStudyAbroad!

Study abroad returnees are encouraged to submit digital stories between 0:30 and 2 minutes long that demonstrate how study abroad gave them an edge, the impact it had on their personal or professional life, and how The New York Times content helped them navigate, enhance or make sense of their experience. Winners will receive a $1,000 cash prize, an iPad, a trip to the IIE Summit on Generation Study Abroad in Washington D.C., and a video spotlight on The New York Times in Education website. Winners will also be recognized as a Generation Study Abroad Voice and featured on the Generation Study Abroad website.

In partnership with Education New Zealand, a Generation Study Abroad country partner, the U.S. – New Zealand Partnership Program seeks to increase academic collaboration between U.S. higher education institutions and New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). ITPs are institutions of higher education that combine theoretical teaching with practical, hands-on experience through industry projects, work placements and internships. The program will include a study tour to New Zealand with visits to six ITPs and attendance at the New Zealand International Education Conference (NZIEC) 2016. The application is open to all accredited colleges and universities in the United States.

This program is brought to you at the significantly reduced rate of $6,000 per institution. The fee includes all program and in country costs for two representatives from your institution.

Eric Northard, who teaches Geography and World History at Grand Rapids High School, is one example of the outstanding work that is being done to bring global awareness into the classroom. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the Summer 2016 awards offered. We thank the ninety-six selection panelists from various colleges and universities across the nation who met at the IIE office in Houston, Texas to review over 3,400 applications for the summer application cycle. Approximately 950 outstanding students were selected to receive the scholarship to participate in credit-bearing study abroad programs and career-oriented internships in countries all around the world.

The Gilman Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries they go by supporting U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not consider these unique and valuable opportunities due to financial constraints. Visit the website for more information.
