Since 1930, the Omni Shoreham Hotel has played host to presidents, world leaders and inaugural balls. What better place for the IIE Summit to take place? This year’s Summit will bring together education, government and business leaders, and journalists for action-oriented discussion on how to ensure national experience is a key part of 21st century education and make study abroad opportunities available to all. The 2016 IIE Summit is part of IIE’s Generation Study Abroad®, a five-year initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade. The Summit will continue to push the envelope to change how we think and "do" study abroad as we work together to achieve our ambitious goal of doubling by the end of the decade.

This campaign has had a positive impact on increasing study abroad participation rates among diverse students. The returnee t-shirt is a centerpiece of the "I, Too, Am Study Abroad" campaign and aims to help participants process their experiences overseas and facilitate conversation about the importance of an education abroad experience. IIE has partnered with SUNY Oswego to make this t-shirt, along with a guide to help U.S. colleges and universities implement their own campaign.

Shawn Patton, Program Manager of IIE’s Center for International Partnerships, will be available at NAFSA to answer questions about the Mexico and Cuba partnership programs. Come visit the IIE booth #1212 on the exhibition floor or contact Shawn beforehand to set up a meeting.

Mexico Partnership Program (open to international universities)
The Mexico Partnership Program, a component within the larger IIE Mexico Higher Education Initiative, will explore the wealth of opportunities for academic partnerships with higher education institutions in Mexico, while also confronting the challenges that have faced partnership building with the country in recent years. Participants of the program will also take part in an IIE-led delegation to Mexico City, Puebla, and Queretaro in September 2016 to meet with important stakeholders from universities, organizations and the government that deal with the Mexican higher education system.

Cuba Partnership Program
As relations continue to improve between the United States and Cuba, opportunities for increased academic partnership are growing. President Obama's historic visit to Cuba in March 2016 further signaled an easing of tensions between the two countries, which allows for greater international collaboration going forward. The Cuba Partnership Program will draw on IIE's relationship with key stakeholders in the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education and Cuban university system, experience leading high-level academic delegations, and expertise in international partnership building to provide expert guidance on U.S.-Cuba academic collaboration. The program will include a delegation to Cuba in October 2016.
