New Application Cycle: Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad Programs and Internships

In August, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship will open the next online application for spring 2014 study abroad programs and internships with a student deadline of October 1st.  The Gilman Scholarship Program’s mission is to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go.  Through the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Gilman Program offers over 2,000 scholarships of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need.  

For the 2013-2014 academic year, in addition to the availability of Critical Need Language Awards of $8,000 each for eligible applicants, ECA has generously provided more funding to offer International Internship Awards for applicants participating on credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.  To be eligible for a Gilman Scholarship, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled at a U.S. institution of higher education, receiving the Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during term abroad, applying to a study abroad program or internship for academic credit in a country not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or Cuba, and abroad for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of an academic year.

The Institute of International Education’s Houston, TX office has administered the Gilman Scholarship Program since its inception in 2001.  Since that time the program has awarded over 14,000 scholarships to U.S. undergraduates who otherwise would not have considered an international education experience to enhance or achieve their academic and professional goals due to financial constraints.
