Final Opportunity: Fall 2016 International Enrollment Hot Topics Survey

There is still time to submit the Fall 2016 survey on international student enrollment. The purpose of this survey is to obtain feedback on current events and trends in the field that may impact your international student enrollments for this academic year (starting in Fall 2016). By sharing this information with the international education community and the media, we hope to develop a wider understanding among the press, the general public, and policy makers at state and national levels, about how higher education institutions continue to be affected by the various factors which impact international enrollments.

All institutional-level responses will be anonymous and only aggregated information will be shared. We ask for your contact information only to ensure that no more than one reply is received per institution, and to facilitate follow-up if there are any questions. If you are not the best contact for this survey, please forward it to another colleague on your campus who may be able to complete it. Please respond by October 25, 2016 so that we may include your responses in the findings that we report to the press and public during International Education Week in November 2016.

IIE Blog: IIE’s HER Program Graduates 100 Girls in Ethiopia

Ethiopia Tilahun, Country Director of IIE’s Addis Ababa office, reflects on the graduation ceremony where 100 girls graduated from high school and from IIE’s Higher Education Readiness program in Ethiopia. Testimonies from the girls themselves are a strong indication of just how powerful this program was not just on the students, but on their families as well. Ethiopia said, "On their graduation day, we wanted to celebrate the accomplishments of the HER girls and provide a forum for other organizations to see the program’s impact on beneficiaries [...] Representatives from government offices, international and local NGOs, UN agencies and others attended the graduation ceremony and left with excitement—some even thinking about how to join hands with us in this precious work of changing lives for the better."

Volunteer to Host an International Student for the 2016-2017 Academic Year

From now through the end of August, the U.S. Department of State is looking for volunteers to open their homes to an international exchange student. Through exchange programs such as FLEX, Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES), and Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), the Department of State offers a unique opportunity for international students between the ages of 15-18 to come study in the United States. Through this experience, host families not only leave lasting impressions of the United States on their exchange students, they also gain invaluable insights into new cultures. International Student Internships Available Through IIE's Global Experience and Training Initiative

Students will be at the forefront of the upcoming United States presidential election with the University of Akron’s International Campaign Fellows (ICF) program, an exciting internship available through IIE’s Global Experience and Training (GET) initiative. Political science enthusiasts will learn about running a campaign, from fundraising and security to press coverage and budget management. Participants will attend events, experience grassroots campaigning, collaborate with professionals, and gain an inside perspective on the results of the U.S. election this season. GET opportunities are for international undergraduate and graduate students, recent college graduates, and young professionals.

GET connects international students and young professionals to unique research and internship opportunities in the United States. Through hands-on training in a variety of fields, GET participants create connections and develop distinguished skill sets while working alongside professionals in their fields. The International Scholars Survey collects data on international scholars engaged in academic activities for part or all of the period beginning July 1, 2015 and ending on June 30, 2016. The survey can be accessed at www.iie.org/surveyforms. The deadline to complete the International Scholars Survey is Friday, July 29, 2016.

The compilation of data published in Open Doors is only possible with the assistance of international education and other higher education professionals at institutions throughout the United States who voluntarily provide their data for aggregate reporting in Open Doors. IIE Blog: International Partnerships: What Does it Mean to be Strategic?

Robin Matross Helms, director of the American Council on Education’s Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement, is a contributing author to IIE’s recent publication, Global Perspectives on Strategic International Partnerships. In her blog post she discusses the how we can better address strategic partnership goals and action plans to maximize the returns on these linkages for students and faculty, as well as organizational structure as a whole. Helms writes, "For a partnership to be strategic, it should contribute to and advance institutional strategy in some way. Has the institution identified particular academic or programmatic areas that it wants to further develop? If so, a carefully chosen partner abroad may be able to provide knowledge, resources, and expertise that can support this development."

Funding for U.S. Study: Update/Add Your Scholarship Listings for 2015 Edition

The Institute of International Education is currently preparing the 2017 edition of its annual directory Funding for United States Study: A Guide for International Students and Professionals, the print companion to IIE's online search engine www.fundingusstudy.org.

With more than 800 grant and scholarship listings, Funding for United States Study is the most comprehensive directory on locating funding for study in the United States. It features detailed descriptions of grants, fellowships, and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study, and doctoral and postdoctoral research in the United States. All basic listings are free of charge and provide an excellent opportunity to publicize your institution's programs.

How to Add or Update Scholarship Listings:

For institutions whose listings appeared in the previous year's directory, we ask that you verify and update your listings. Institutions whose listings did not appear in previous years' directories can add scholarships or grants that are available for international students.

IIE Launches Emergency Student Fund for U.S.-Based Students from Syria and Yemen

The Emergency Student Fund (ESF) of the Institute of International Education (IIE) is issuing a call for U.S. colleges and universities that currently have students from Syria and Yemen enrolled on their campuses to nominate those students who have emergency needs for funds to continue their studies so that their academic careers are not interrupted as a result of the crises in their home countries.

Syria-ESF and Yemen-ESF will provide grants of $2,000 – $5,000 each to selected students nominated by their U.S. host colleges and universities who are unable to continue or complete their degree program in the United States due to serious financial difficulties precipitated by the situation in the region.

Accredited U. S. campuses are invited to nominate up to five students in total, including students from one or both countries, at their institutions for whom help is needed to complete the spring 2016 semester. International Student Advisers or other campus officials should complete the attached nomination form and e-mail it to ESF@iie.org by February 19th, 2016, at 5pm EST. Awards will be announced by March 7th. Applications directly from students will NOT be accepted. U.S. host campuses nominating students for Syria-ESF and Yemen-ESF awards are expected to provide some emergency assistance to the nominated students, through tuition waivers, full or partial scholarships, housing, stipends, loans, work study, or other forms of support.

IIE’s Emergency Student Fund provides grants to post-secondary students matriculated at accredited educational institutions in the U.S. whose sources of support have been impacted by natural disaster or other crises. Since 2010, IIE's ESF has provided $2 million in emergency grants to over 700 students from Japan, Haiti, Libya, Thailand, the Philippines, Syria, Iran, and Nepal whose home sources of financial support were impacted by crisis or natural disaster. The Institute seeks to have a fund in place so that IIE can respond quickly to help students when disasters and emergencies arise.
