International Application Deadline:  February 2, 2015
U.S. Application Deadline: February 16, 2015

Fulbright Arctic Initiative will bring together a network of scholars, professionals and applied researchers from the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia and Sweden for a series of three seminar meetings and a Fulbright exchange experience. The Initiative will provide a platform for scholars from across the Arctic region to engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem-solving and multi-disciplinary research in one of four areas: Energy, Water, Health, and Infrastructure.

Sixteen outstanding scholars from the U.S. and abroad will be selected to participate in the program as Fulbright Arctic Initiative Scholars through an open, merit-based competition. Co-Lead Scholars Dr. Michael Sfraga and Dr. Ross A. Virginia will provide intellectual leadership throughout the Program, in addition to mentoring program participants and facilitating discussion and collaboration among the Arctic Initiative Scholars. Program activities will commence in spring 2015 and conclude in fall of 2016.

Program Activities
At its core, the Fulbright Arctic Initiative will create a network to stimulate international scientific collaboration on Arctic issues while increasing mutual understanding between people of the United States and the people of other countries. Using a collaborative model to translate theory into practice, program participants will address public-policy research questions relevant to Arctic nations’ shared challenges. Program activities will commence in spring 2015 and conclude in fall of 2016.

Eligibility
Successful candidates will include scholars at all career stages, applied researchers or professionals active in the academic, public or private sectors.

In order to better accommodate the interests and commitments of early career scholars, the Fulbright Program is offering an additional application cycle for a select number of 2015-2016 postdoctoral awards, with the later deadline of January 15, 2015.

Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar Awards are open to U.S. scholars who have recently completed their doctoral degrees – typically within the five previous years. These grants present an excellent opportunity for recently minted PhDs to deepen their expertise, to acquire new skills, to work with additional resources and to make connections with others in their fields. Postdoctoral awards are available in STEM fields, the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Scholars will be expected to engage with graduate students in the host country and to be involved with host university training in cutting edge research in their specializations. In addition to their primary research or teaching activities, grantees will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host country academic community.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq and the Fulbright Junior Faculty Development Programs for Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories are designed to bring junior Iraqi, Lebanese, and Palestinian scholars to U.S. host institutions for faculty development, mentoring, and cultural exchange activities. These ten-week programs are designed to equip grantees with the knowledge and tools needed to build the capacity of universities in Iraq, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Territories and to advance the education of future generations. In addition, these programs lay the foundation for the grantees and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and to identify areas of cooperation that can be sustained beyond the grant period.

Proposals from U.S. host institutions are being sought to implement the ten-week summer programs. Successful proposals will provide participating institutions with a unique opportunity to establish lasting relationships with faculty members at universities in Iraq, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Territories. The program dates, academic cohort disciplines, and number anticipated numbers of scholars vary across the participating countries and territories. Institutions are invited to submit a proposal to host a Fulbright scholar cohort from one of the available programs.

Objectives
  • Build higher education capacity in Iraq, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Territories through faculty development and mentoring for junior scholars
  • Foster long-term collaboration and institutional linkages between Iraqi, Lebanese, Palestinian Scholars, and U.S. academics
  • Promote mutual understanding between Iraqi, Lebanese, Palestinian Scholars, and Americans by facilitating the scholar’s engagement with the broader host campus community
