Deadline: August 30, 2013

Now is the time to renew your IIENetwork membership, which will allow you to continue to take full advantage of the many resources IIE offers. IIE membership renewal forms for the 2013/2014 academic year have been sent by email to the membership contact at each member institution. If you have not yet renewed your IIE membership, please take a moment to complete your renewal by August 30.   

IIENetwork is IIE's membership program, with over 1,200 member institutions around the world. Each IIENetwork designee is an important link in a network of over 7,000 individuals with a commitment to the internationalization of their institutions. As an IIENetwork member, you benefit from international education publications, resources, discounts, and sharing best practices. IIE's offices around the world work closely with members to assist you in accessing IIE's expertise and information on the many programs for which your students and faculty may be eligible. 

As an IIENetwork member, your campus will receive complimentary copies of our valuable print resources, including the Open Doors report, IIEPassport Study Abroad Directory, the IIENetwork Handbook for International Educators, the IIENetworker magazine, and more. You will also be able to access members-only data on www.iie.org, receive member discounts for IIE's Recruitment Fairs in Asia and International Academic Partnership Program. Finally, your IIENetwork membership ensures that you are eligible to nominate the innovative programs at your campus for the 2014 IIE Andrew Heiskell Awards

IIE Vice President Edith Cecil writes about recent trainings for the Higher Education Readiness (HER) Program

The HER scholarship recipients have been busy this past month with a summer full of English language and leadership development trainings. "The ‘train the trainer’ sessions were in-depth and lively and provided the professionals with not only the content of the leadership development skill building sessions but with guidance on facilitation, communication and team building for the HER scholarship recipients," Cecil writes in IIE's Opening Minds blog.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is currently in Brazil, just published an Op-Ed in Estadao, a popular Brazilian newspaper. This is Secretary Kerry’s first visit to Brazil since he took office in February. The article discusses the strong bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Brazil and highlights educational initiatives, including the Obama Administration’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas initiative and the Brazil Government’s Ciência sem Fronteiras program.

Sol Melia and Havanatur are assisting with a People-to-People familiarization program in Cuba for U.S. travel professionals organized by the Fund for Reconciliation and Development, an OFAC licensed NGO long active with educational exchange with Cuba.  The schedule (September 20 – 29, 2013) will encompass Havana, Matanzas, Varadero, Santa Clara,Cayo Santa Maria,Trinidad and Cienfuegos. This is especially appropriate for university departments of tourism and hospitality, but general interest study abroad staff are also welcome.  Total cost for the trip: 9 nights $1,984 (including air).

The CYRUS Institute of Knowledge invites you to participate in an upcoming conference Entitled: West-Meets-East: Exploring Sustainable Development, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Opportunities. The conference is co-sponsored by Bentley University and HULT International Business School, and Southern New Hampshire University.

Participants are invited to submit a proposal for an interactive paper presentation session that reflect different perspectives across disciplines. The International Conference on Transnational Education and Learning
(ICTEL) offers an engaging opportunity for the discussion and presentation of trends, opportunities and challenges in transnational education and learning. The purpose of ICTEL is to provide scholars, administrators and other practitioners with an academic forum that fosters sharing and collaboration to discuss frameworks that will contribute to changing policies and enriching the literature and practices on transnational education and learning worldwide.

The program will consist primarily of presentations selected through this call for proposals.

Topics can be on any subject that can help frame the state of transnational education and learning. Broad categories that are acceptable include:
  •    Concepts and theories
  •    Policies and legal frameworks
  •    Practices
  •    Transnational education and information technologies
  •    Transnational learning
  •    Evaluation and Quality Assessment

Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the online application is now open for students participating in study abroad programs and internships during the spring 2014 term.  The Gilman Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply. Spring 2014 online applications are due October 1, 2013 by 11:59pm (central)
 
Students applying for any academic term must meet the eligibility requirements below: 
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited two or four-year U.S. Institution 
  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term abroad 
  • United States citizen
  • Participating in a study abroad program or internship that is no less than four weeks (28 days) in one country and no more than an academic year
  • Applying to or accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's home institution
  • Studying or interning in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba
The Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Since the program’s inception in 2001, the Gilman Program has awarded over 15,000 U.S. undergraduates of high financial need to study and intern abroad in over 130 countries from more than 1,100 institutions.
