Faculty-Led Internationalization: Challenges, Opportunities, and Strategic Approaches

The Spring 2016 issue of the IIE Networker magazine, with the theme of Faculty-Driven Internationalization, highlights the important role that faculty members play in internationalizing the campus. They bring international perspectives to classrooms and labs, and have an important voice in championing study abroad and a global culture.

María de los Angeles Crummett, who heads IIE’s scholar division and works closely with the U.S. Department of State on the Fulbright Scholar Program as the Executive Director of IIE’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars, was the guest editor for this issue. Her article on "Faculty-Led Internationalization: Challenges, Opportunities, and Strategic Approaches" discusses how to support and cultivate globally minded faculty, and looks at how institutions can make effective use of the full breadth of Fulbright Scholar opportunities to ensure deep and long-lasting internationalization outcomes.

María brings a rich perspective to this topic, having served as a leader in Global Affairs at the University of South Florida and on the boards of numerous international organizations and international studies networks. With two Fulbright experiences herself -- lecturing in Economics in Colombia as a Fulbright Scholar and visiting Japan as a Fulbright International Education Administrator -- she has also served as a Fulbright Scholar Liaison and a Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador.
