IIE is pleased to announce the release of A Parent Guide to Study Abroad. Written by three leading study abroad experts—Stacie Nevadomski Berdan, Allan E. Goodman, and William Gertz—this companion guide to A Student Guide to Study Abroad contains critical information parents need to inform themselves and to support their high school or college student as he or she navigates the study abroad experience.

In this first-of-its-kind guide, packed with practical information written specifically for parents, the authors make a strong case for the importance of parental involvement that can influence and shape a successful cross-cultural experience, including:
  • Clarifying the value of study abroad
  • Identifying the right study abroad program
  • Figuring out the financials
  • Staying safe and healthy abroad
  • Preparing for success abroad
  • Offering the appropriate mixture of support
  • Helping your child leverage the experience for personal and professional success
To kick off the release, we are offering bulk orders of 20 guidebooks for $20.00, or $4.95 each at www.iie.org/publications. You may also receive a free copy with each purchase of A Student Guide to Study Abroad.

We encourage you to use this book widely in helping bring parents on board with study abroad, and helping them provide useful support to their students who are looking into study abroad options. For example, you may wish to consider working with colleagues on campus to:
  • Include copies in an orientation packet for freshmen or a back-to-school packet for upperclassmen
  • Hand out copies during prospective student days and family weekend events
  • Offer to send a copy home to parents of students who come to your study abroad office
IIE is providing this book as part of its Generation Study Abroad campaign to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.
