Fleeing a Brutal War, Syrian Students Find Opportunity in Rural Illinois

An article in The Chronicle of Higher Education features two students sponsored by the IIE Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis—a global consortium of more than three dozen colleges that has emerged this past year to aid Syrian students. Mariela Shaker and Anas Karkout along with eight other Syrian’s recently arrived at Monmouth College, one of the consortium’s newest members. Ms. Shaker is a violinist and wants to devote herself to her studies in the United States so she can go on to play professionally, "and let my country be proud of me."
