To mark its 10th anniversary this year, IIE's Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) is featuring the inspiring stories of 10 threatened scholars whose lives and academic work have been saved by the Fund. The first to be highlighted is Shemeem Abbas, who applied to SRF in 2004 after Islamic clerics at her university in Pakistan brought charges against her that included blasphemy, an offense punishable by death. Now an associate professor at SUNY-Purchase, she is an award-winning author who teaches across disciplinary boundaries, including political science, women's studies, literature and creative writing, with a research focus on women's rituals in Islamic societies.
