Tying It All Together: Internationalization, Excellence, Funding and the Social Dimension in Higher Education
Helsinki, Finland
June 10-12, 2012

Internationalization and mobility are high on the agenda these days. But what is its relationship to other important concerns in the tertiary sector? Does internationalization reinforce the pursuit of excellence, or does excellence generate internationalization? How does internationalization relate to social concerns? Is a socially inclusive university also automatically an "internationalized" one? What is the relationship between mobility and internationalization and the funding of higher education? Can only rich universities be truly international? Or can universities become rich through internationalization?

These are some of the questions at the center of this year’s Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) Annual Conference. The 2012 Annual Conference will be organized in collaboration with ACA's Finnish member CIMO, and will take place in Helsinki. The conference brings together a select group of leading thinkers. They will address, from a multiplicity of perspectives, the potential synergies between four hotly debated issues in global higher education: internationalization and mobility, excellence, funding, and the social dimension. In addressing these issues, the conference will take a "holistic view" and explore their relevance to one another.
