Help Us Build a Better Future: Year-End Message from IIE President Allan Goodman

Through the generosity of donors and sponsors like you, the Institute of International Education (IIE) fosters peace and prosperity through the international exchange of people and ideas. Your support this year has benefited nearly 30,000 individuals from almost every country of the world. You have helped build a better future by making "international" an integral part of what it means to be educated, keeping academic opportunities open in the U.S. and around the world, and delivering emergency support to students and scholars in danger.

Please help us continue this important work in 2012 by making a gift today.

Here are three stories from the past year that demonstrate how your investment in IIE has advanced positive change in our world:

The Fulbright Program, which IIE administers on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, offers dynamic opportunities for students and scholars to collaborate globally to address challenges and promote mutual understanding. In 2011, a young American woman specializing in environmental public policy received a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Wuhan, China, a city of 10 million. Her research on local policies to reduce plastic waste explored ways to promote environmental awareness in China.

Your support helps IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) save the lives and work of scholars around the world facing persecution. Recently, a highly respected physician and professor from Darfur, Sudan, received a fellowship from SRF after being threatened with detention and torture for treating war victims in a rehabilitation center that he had founded. Today, this scholar continues his valuable research in a safe haven country, speaks openly about the crisis in Darfur, and awaits the day that he will return home to resume his important work with war victims. To date, SRF has rescued 436 scholars from 46 countries, placing them at over 250 safe institutions in 40 countries.

Your contributions to the Institute make it possible for us to respond with emergency support to students during crises and natural disasters. One Haitian student who was assisted through your generosity after the tragic earthquake wrote: "This contribution to my education will have a lifelong impact in my life and the lives of those I will be caring for in Haiti after I receive my nursing degree. Thank you." Most recently, your generosity helped hundreds of students from Japan and Libya.

Thank you for making our critical work and many other stories like these possible.

Please partner with us to continue investing in responsible future leaders and our global community by making a year-end gift to IIE today. Learn more about giving opportunities and ways to donate now.

With gratitude for your support of IIE and best wishes for 2012,

Dr. Allan E. Goodman
President and CEO, Institute of International Education
