IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Inaugural Summit

October 24, 2014, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Institute of International Education
809 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY

The Institute of International Education (IIE) and its Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) invite you to the first IIE-SRF Summit, "Protecting Threatened Scholars: Collective Action during Repression, Crisis and Conflict."

We are delighted that the Honorable Michael H. Posner, former Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the State Department and co-founder of the Center for Business and Human Rights at NYU's Stern School of Business, will offer a keynote address at the Summit.

Since its founding in 2002, IIE-SRF has provided support to over 575 professors, senior researchers and public intellectuals suffering from harassment, arrest, violence, and other grave abuses. To save scholars’ lives and work, IIE-SRF arranges visiting academic positions at universities and higher learning institutions worldwide where they may resume their teaching, research, and writing free from harm.

Our work is made possible by many partners in the international community: universities and colleges; human rights actors and organizations; philanthropic donors; and education leaders. The Summit will bring this community together for the first time on the topic of protecting threatened scholars, with the goal of increasing awareness of the contributions that many partners make to this effort.

The IIE-SRF Summit aims to recognize the importance of collective action to protect the world’s most threatened academics. Ultimately, our goal is to foster greater collaboration across sectors and promote awareness of both the causes of scholar persecution and the resources available to combat its consequences.

Panel discussions will highlight best practices and explore spaces of cross-sector collaboration to:
  • address urgent concerns related to the academic emergencies in Syria and Iraq,
  • explore innovative resource allocation,
  • share original IIE-SRF research and related work by our partners, and
  • develop strategies to enhance our collective efforts to protect threatened scholars.
We look forward to reconnecting with IIE-SRF alumni, current IIE-SRF fellows, and university partners as well as inviting new partners to join our work, and developing innovative collaborations to enhance this global effort to protect threatened scholars.
