Dean Pittman, a career member of the Foreign Service, was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Organizations in December 2010. Pittman served from 2009 to 2010 as the Senior Diplomacy Advisor for the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR). Prior to joining the QDDR team, Pittman was a member of the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff, where he was responsible for issues related to Europe and the Administration’s climate change agenda. Other domestic assignments have included Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State (2002-2003), Director for the Balkans at the National Security Council (2000-2002), Legislative Management Officer for the East Asian and Pacific region in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs, and Thailand desk officer. Overseas Pittman served as Consul General to Northern Ireland from 2004-2007 and was assigned to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq as deputy director of the governance office from 2003-2004. Other overseas assignments include tours at our embassies in Sarajevo, Mozambique, and Guyana and a detail assignment to the OSCE in Bosnia. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Pittman worked on the staff of US Congressman for eight years and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gabon.
