Barbara Crossette is the UN correspondent for The Nation and author of several books on Asia. She was in Burma in September working on a Myanmar and Southeast Asia article for the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions 2013 briefing book. Previously, Crossette was The New York Times chief correspondent in Southeast Asia and South Asia and later the Times bureau chief at the UN. She has also been a diplomatic correspondent in Washington and a reporter in Central America, the Caribbean and Canada. Crossette received a George Polk Award for her coverage of the assassination in India of Rajiv Gandhi, a Fulbright Award for contributions to international understanding, and the Shorenstein Prize from Harvard and Stanford universities for writings on Asia that enhanced understanding of the region in the West.

In addition to her articles, Crossette has published several books including India Facing the 21st Century and So Close to Heaven: The Vanishing Buddhist Kingdoms of the Himalayas, as well as a book of travel essays on Asia. In 2010 and 2011, Crossette reported and wrote the State of World Population reports for UNFPA, the first focused on women in postconflict areas and the second on the world at 7 billion. Crossette has also taught journalism at Columbia and Princeton universities, was a Fulbright teaching fellow at Punjab University in India, and is currently a senior fellow at the Ralph Bunche Institute at CUNY’s Graduate Center. In 2003, she led a journalism workshop in Phnom Penh for writers and editors from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma.
