By: Green Key Global On June 4th, 2012, Green Key Global officially launched their new Carbon Calculator, developed specifically for the lodging industry. The Carbon Calculator will become a great asset to hotels in determining their annual carbon footprint (based on a set of key sources and activities). The Carbon Calculator was created in partnership by the Hotel Association of Canada and the Greater Toronto Hotel Association to meet the growing demand for an industry-specific carbon management tool.

When the environmental movement of this century began to really gain steam a few years ago, many companies decided to "go green" in a variety of ways. While some companies implemented recycling programs to reduce waste, others installed energy saving appliances and re-designed offices to include more environmentally-friendly materials as well as to take better advantage of natural lighting. The environmental benefits of these actions are readily apparent: the U.S. Green Building Council reports that on average, "green" buildings experience 30-50 percent reduced energy use, 35 percent reduced carbon emissions, 40 percent reduced water use, and 70 percent reduced solid waste. However, aside from its obviously positive impact on environment and its connection to good corporate citizenship standing, becoming more sustainable can also have a number of other benefits for companies.

Green Lodging News Regulations proposed in Massachusetts by that state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will ban commercial businesses, including hotels, from discarding food waste. Greg Cooper, director of consumer programs for the DEP, expects the regulations to be implemented by the middle of 2014.

Travel News Research carried out by the company has shown that hotels in the U.S. consume an average of 84.7 billion kWh of electricity, annually, which is equivalent to the electricity supplied to Washington DC for ten years. Even a 10 percent reduction in energy usage would result in saving 8.47 billion Kwh of electricity, per year.

Green Lodging News The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) announced the winners of the AH&LA Achievement Awards, part of the annual Stars of the Industry Awards, which honor stand-out initiatives at hotel properties. In a ceremony held during the AH&LA Summer Summit at the InterContinental Houston near the Galleria, these awards, which have been awarded annually since 1966, distinguish individual hotels that have developed outstanding programs, events and campaigns. Winners were chosen in the categories of Good Earthkeeping, Community Service and Diversity, among others.
