Demystifying Green Jargon
In previous issues of Green Scene, we’ve talked about individual sustainability initiatives in areas such as energy, water, procurement, waste management and carbon. While all of these individual initiatives are important, they have more impact if you can bundle them together to tell your company’s overall sustainability story. A sustainability report is like a report card: it provides a snapshot of all the work you’ve done to make your hotel a more sustainable organization. It also signals how important sustainability is to the success of your hotel.

A new year is upon us which means a new round of on-site verification audits is about to begin. Each hotel enrolled in the Green Key Eco‐Rating Program is subject to an on‐site inspection at any time while participating in the Program. Annually, 20% of participating Green Key members will be randomly selected to receive an on‐site verification inspection. To date, inspections are in place throughout the United States and Canada.

On the second floor of the Centre for Green Cities, Toronto’s community environmental hub in the heart of the Don Valley, senior leaders from Wal-Mart Canada Corp., Unilever and Cascades Inc. have gathered to talk about the role of sustainability in today’s corporations and, perhaps more importantly, to make the business case for collaboration. Wal-Mart Canada organized the symposium as a follow-up to the Green Business Summit it hosted in February 2010, which brought together hundreds of business leaders from across industries to share best practices.

The United Nations says humans are more concerned about damage done to the environment than we were 20 years ago—but we're still destroying it faster than we can fix it. That's part of a snapshot prepared by the United Nations Environment Program in a report called Keeping Track that looks at a wide range of changes that have occurred since the first Earth Summit in Rio in 1992.

Accor recently decided to assess its environmental impact 15 years after it took a stand and started taking concrete action to embrace sustainable development. This group started working on gauging its environmental footprint at the end of 2010 to gather a comprehensive corpus of reliable facts in order to step up its strategy on that front. This study is in a class of its own and stretches beyond measuring greenhouse-gas emissions to encompass energy and water consumption, water pollution and waste generation throughout lifecycles in the group.

Rated members of the Green Key Program are required to redo their assessments every two years from the date they first completed the original assessment. Members due for re-assessment are notified at the time of their annual renewal.

Exception: all members who joined prior to Oct. 1, 2011 are required to redo their assessment in 2012 as a result of the recent program updates. These members will not then be required to redo their assessment again until their anniversary date in 2014.
