Sneak It In Week is a week-long initiative where ParticipACTION challenges busy Canadians to sneak more physical activity into their workday. We encourage people to wear sneakers to work, walk to lunch, park a few blocks away, or hit the pavement on coffee breaks. Being physically active at work is a great way to help adults get the 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by Canada's Physical Activity Guide. And research shows that even tiny bouts of physical activity, as little as 10 minutes at a time, are associated with increased fitness.

Inclusion Works '14 is the go to event in Canada for anyone interested in building partnerships with Indigenous people, businesses and communities, with something to offer everyone: corporate/educational leaders, VPs of diversity, HR professionals, CSR managers, procurement officers, communicators, and Indigenous and employment/student liaisons - all while enjoying an early spring along Vancouver's picturesque waterfront.

For more information about the event or to register, please click here.

The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education invites you to participate in an upcoming networking event for full-time Human Resource Management students - a Resumania. We believe that our students would value your experience and expertise in this industry and the insight you could bring this forum.

Resumania is based on the speed-mentoring concept. It will provide our students with the opportunity to meet one-on-one with recognized HR professionals and get feedback on their resumes. Students will move round-robin across 20 stations, where they will have 6 minutes with each professional. We will end the evening with a Mix & Mingle Hors d'Oeuvres networking hour.

Please consider the following information to determine your availability:

Date: Thursday, April 3, 2014
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
Venue: 2M70 (2nd Floor, Manitoba Hall, Room 70, Main Campus)
Refreshments: Hors d'Oeuvres to follow

A small commitment of time will make a huge difference to our students. In a tight job market for new professionals, a strong resume can open doors, which might otherwise be closed to new graduates. We hope to see you at this event.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Mekela Wickramasinghe at me.wickramasinghe@uwinnipeg.ca or 204-982-1143.

Every two years, the Boston Consulting Group conducts a survey called "Creating People Advantage".

It is done in conjunction with the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA) which is an affiliation of around 90 HR associations worldwide representing over 600,000 HR professionals (www.wfpma.com).

The study aims to identify key HR priorities and understand the current challenges and opportunities that companies are facing around the globe and is the largest and most comprehensive study series in the world on people management trends in business.

The 2014 survey is now open for participation and will investigate the latest trends in:

  • HR data analytics
  • Business impact of HR
  • HR target operating model
  • Leadership and talent management
  • Enabling high-performance HR
Additionally, the Creating People Advantage researchers are searching for the most innovative HR practices through an HR innovation competition.

An invitation to complete the survey is being sent to every member of the Canadian provincial HR Associations and you can participate by opening the link www.bcg.com/cpa2014.

Please note the close date is 15 April 2014.

There are no costs involved. We will get a tailor-made analysis of trends and priorities for Canada/North America and an advance copy of the new 2014 report when it is complete, both of which we will share with our members.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

You get the employee engagement you deserve. If you don't engage with them, they won't engage with you. If all you need is compliance, indirect communication is fine. If you want them to contribute, you'll need direct communication. If you want them to commit to the cause, you must make an emotional connection with them. This is particularly true at important moments of truth starting with how you onboard them. So, take onboarding personally and make it personal. Read more here

Many entrepreneurs and businesses think they work smarter when actually they don't. Here are some classic errors - you might think you're working smarter when you do these things, but you're not. Read more here

Mental health at work is an issue for all businesses, of all sizes, from self-employed singletons to corporations that employ thousands. Speaking in Parliament in January this year, Norman Lamb, the UK Minister for Care and Support, noted that at least one in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life; that many experience poor mental well-being but do not have a diagnosable mental disorder; and that mental illness is now the cause of over 40% of sickness benefit claims. The average cost of poor mental health to business, he added, is just over £1,000 per year, or almost £26 billion across the UK economy. Read more here
